  1. 1. Estimating historic ranges of extinct scavenging birds from North America during the late Pleistocene using co-occurrence data from the fossil record

    University essay from Göteborgs universitet / Institutionen för biologi och miljövetenskap

    Author : Melissa Miranda; [2023-06-30]
    Keywords : Scavenging birds; Vultures; Co-occurrence Data; Range Estimates; Spatial Autoregressive Models; Co-extinction;

    Abstract : The aim of my study was to estimate and compare the historic range of nine scavenging birds from North America that went jointly extinct with their mammalian megafaunal prey in the Late Pleistocene. Although the severity and timing of their co-extinction are strongly correlated, there has been little analytical support in providing estimates for the possible geographic distribution of scavenging birds prior to the extinction event. 2. 2. Habitat types in relation to bird diversity in boreal forestry landscapes in Sweden

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för biologisk grundutbildning

    Author : Engla Grönvall; [2023]
    Keywords : Biodiversty; Forestry; Bird diversity; Habitat types; Species Richness;

    Abstract : Boreal forests in Europe are intensively managed for timber and pulp production, resulting in decreased biodiversity, and in the long-term leading to a reduced number of functioning ecosystem services. To develop a more sustainable forest management it is important to investigate what features and habitat types are needed to preserve a high diversity of species within the forestry landscapes. 3. 3. Birds in the City : Bird biodiversity in a boreal northern urban environment

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för biologisk grundutbildning

    Author : Izabel Eriksson Reuterborg; [2022]
    Keywords : bird biodiversity; urban biodiversity; urbanization; urban birds;

    Abstract : Urbanization is a growing threat to biodiversity across the globe. As more and more habitats are being destroyed and species extinction rates are rising, we have started looking at how we might decrease this loss of biodiversity. One answer is changing our urban environments to more biodiversity friendly ones. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of active and passive conservation on forest structure and bird diversity in Färna Ecopark

    University essay from SLU/School for Forest Management

    Author : Arvid Sandström; [2021]
    Keywords : biodiversity; deciduous forest; avifauna;

    Abstract : Voluntary set-asides are an important part of the conservation of forest species in Sweden. Set aside stands are either treated passively by leaving them untouched (in Swedish abbreviated as NO) or with active, often invasive maintenance (NS). READ MORE

  5. 5. A sound of silence: the framing of forest bird diversity among Swedish forest owners

    University essay from Lunds universitet/LUCSUS

    Author : Jenny Bergenheim; [2021]
    Keywords : forestry; biodiversity; forest birds; framing analysis; sustainability science; Sweden; Social Sciences;

    Abstract : Debates around biodiversity and forestry in Sweden have gotten increasingly polarised, with two conflicting forestry goals of production and environmental conservation. Significantly for forest birds, two different claims are occurring simultaneously: 1) forest bird abundance is increasing with positive population trends for some species while 2) there is a stagnation or even decline in forest bird species diversity.
