  1. 16. Vermicompost for reduction of vegetable waste - and a possible means to produce fish feed in aquaponic systems?

    University essay from SLU/Dept. of Biosystems and Technology (from 130101)

    Author : Lisa Sandell; [2014]
    Keywords : aquaculture; earthworm protein ; fish feed; recycling strategies ; vermiculture;

    Abstract : Aquaponics is a food production system consisting of a consecutive cultivation of plants and aquatic animals, fish or shellfish, in recirculating water. The plants feed on the nutritious effluents from the fish tank and bacteria converts ammonia from the fish tank into nitrate that is absorbed by the plants. READ MORE

  2. 17. Aquaculture effluents as fertilizer in hydroponic cultivation : a case study comparing nutritional and microbiological properties

    University essay from SLU/Dept. of Biosystems and Technology (from 130101)

    Author : Johan Lund; [2014]
    Keywords : Organic hydroponic; Aquaponic; Aquaculture; Plant nutrition; Microbial horticulture;

    Abstract : This paper evaluates the prospects for utilizing aquaculture effluents as a nutrient source in organic hydroponic, as is the case in aquaponics. The development of organic hydroponics is dependent on replacing synthetic fertilizers with organically derived nutrients, such as those found in aquaculture effluents. READ MORE

  3. 18. Aquaponic systems : Potentials on a northern latitude

    University essay from Avdelningen för ekoteknik och hållbart byggande

    Author : David Carlsson; [2013]
    Keywords : Aquaponic; Aquaculture; Growbed; Biodiversity; Trout growth; Fish tank; System analysis; Closed loop;

    Abstract : Aquaponics is a food production method that combines hydroponic and aquaculture to form a system that, through symbiosis, re-circulates all the water and nutrients – and thereby negates any discharge of eutrophied or contaminated residuals – in order to grow terrestrial plants and aquatic life. To study the possibilities of aquaponics at northern latitude, a small scale aquaponic system was constructed in Jämtland, a county in the Mid Sweden region (latitude 63°) and studied while running over a nine month period, August 2012 to April 2013.
