  1. 1. Antarctic Subglacial Lakes as Environmental Analogues for Possible Hidden Biospheres on the Moons Europa and Enceladus

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Jonas Fahlman; [2023]
    Keywords : astrobiology; icy moons; subglacial lakes; ice dynamics; thermal regimes; extremophiles; anthropogenic contamination; astrobiologi; ismånar; subglaciala sjöar; is-dynamik; termiska regimer; extremofiler; antropologisk kontaminering;

    Abstract : The evolving science of astrobiology for the search for life beyond Earth has put focus on the possibility of subsurface bodies of liquid water beneath the surface of icy moons within our Solar System. Specifically, the Jovian moon of Europa and the Saturnian moon of Enceladus show telling characteristics of endogenous heating through their complex tidal resonances with their parent planets – suggesting the presence of oceans of liquid water and therefore a potential for astrobiology. 2. 2. A quantitative analysis of plume gas distributions from different detection studies on Europa

    University essay from KTH/Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS)

    Author : Anujan Ranganathan; [2023]
    Keywords : Europa; Water; Plume distribution; Surface Density; Column Density; Total number of molecules; Europa; Vatten; Plym Distribution; Ytdensitet; Kolumndensitet; Total mängd molekyler;

    Abstract : The search for water has been vital in our solar system as water indicates a potential for life. The search has been extended to satellites orbiting the outer planets. It has already been proven that water exists on Saturn’s moon, Enceladus, where the spacecraft Cassini did a flyby through a water plume. READ MORE

  3. 3. Deriving Spectral Maps from JWST Data : A Study of Enceladus’ Plumes

    University essay from KTH/Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS)

    Author : Stephan Weissenböck; [2023]
    Keywords : Data Analysis; Enceladus; Plumes; Atmosphere; JWST; NIRSpec; IFU; Infrared spectroscopy; Dataanalys; Enceladus; plym; atmosfär; JWST; NIRSpec; IFU; infraröd spektroskopi;

    Abstract : This study investigates the presence of water vapor plumes in the region south of Enceladus, a moon in the Saturnian system, through observations conducted by the James Webb Space Telescope. Enceladus is believed to harbor a subsurface ocean or localized water reservoir that gives rise to water geysers, expelling vapor into its tenuous atmosphere and outer space. READ MORE

  4. 4. Finding stars that are likely to be from accreted satellite galaxies

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Astrofysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Author : Helena Cronstedt; [2023]
    Keywords : galaxy mergers; merger debris; velocity space; Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : The Milky Way galaxy has through its lifetime merged with several smaller galaxies in its surroundings. Merger events like these play an important role in the formation of galaxies and are therefore of great interest to better our understanding of galaxy formation. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Metallicity Structure of the Milky Way Halo II : Characterising the distant halo substructure

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Observationell astrofysik

    Author : Amanda Byström; [2022]
    Keywords : Milky Way; Galactic archaeology; halo; photometric metallicities; stellar catalogue; Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage; Sagittarius; Pristine survey; metallicity; Gaia mission;

    Abstract : The Milky Way galaxy, like all spiral galaxies, is surrounded by a roughly spherical distribution of stars called the halo. The halo was largely formed when the galaxy merged with smaller galaxies. READ MORE
