  1. 1. INDUCTIVE RAILWAY SWITCH POINT HEATING : Improved control algorithm and phase compensation analysis for an inductive turnout heating system, and comparison with a resistive heating system

    University essay from Mälardalens universitet/Akademin för ekonomi, samhälle och teknik

    Author : Erik Nordlund; [2023]
    Keywords : Inductive switch point heating; Turnout heating; railway turnout heating; Inductive heating;

    Abstract : Railway turnout heating is essential during the winter because snow and ice can hinder the movement of the switch. In Sweden, heating has traditionally been done using resistive heating wires mounted to the stock rail, but the technology is outdated and generally exhibits low efficiency and performance. 2. 2. Opportunities with Modular Systems in Level Crossings : A Case Study in the Swedish Railway Industry

    University essay from KTH/Skolan för industriell teknik och management (ITM)

    Author : Marcus Ankaräng; [2023]
    Keywords : level crossing; railway; modular system; systems engineering; systems development; plankorsning; järnväg; modulsystem; systemteknik; systemutveckling;

    Abstract : Level crossings are a dangerous part of railways, causing several deaths every year. While the safest solution is to remove crossings altogether using bridges or tunnels, this is complicated and cannot be done on a large scale. Many level crossings will therefore continue to exist. 3. 3. Energy Usage in Railway Wayside Object Heating : Modeling of melting of Ice, Estimation of heating power requirement in Switch and Renewable energy feasibility for a Railway system

    University essay from KTH/Skolan för industriell teknik och management (ITM)

    Author : Sidharth Kapoor; [2022]
    Keywords : Melting of Ice; Numerical modeling; Transient conjugate heat transfer; Transient analysis; CFD; Switch heating; Heat pumps in Railways; Issmältning; Numerisk modellering; Transient värmeöverföring; Transientanalys; CFD; Värmepumpar i järnvägar;

    Abstract : Trafikverket operates about 12000 Switches and crossings (SnCs) of which 6800 are equipped with an electrical heating system of 10−30kW power to keep SnCs functional throughout the winters by keeping them free of Snow/Ice. The energy consumption is approximately 200−130GWh/year costing approximately 10−15 million Euros annually. READ MORE

  4. 4. Parametric Studies of Train-Track-Bridge Interaction : An evaluation of the dynamic amplification due to track irregularities for freight transport

    University essay from KTH/Bro- och stålbyggnad

    Author : Rasmus Elm Dahlman; Emil Lundberg; [2021]
    Keywords : Dynamics; dynamic amplification factor; railway bridge; train-track-bridge interaction; vehicle model; track irregularities; PSD; Dynamisk förstoringsfaktor; dynamik; järnvägsbroar; tåg-spår-bro interaktion; fordonsmodell; spårojämnheter; PSD;

    Abstract : In this thesis a train-track-bridge interaction (TTBI) model is developed in order to study the dynamic amplification from track irregularities on railway bridges traversed by freight trains. These simulations are of great importance since rail freight transport is expected to increase in order to meet the climate goals. READ MORE

  5. 5. Artificial Intelligence applications for railway signalling

    University essay from KTH/Transportplanering

    Author : Benjamin Smakic; [2021]
    Keywords : Artificial Intelligence; AI; Machine Learning; ML; Computer Vision; railway signalling; ERTMS level 3; GPS; autonomous train operations; Artificiell Intelligens; Maskininlärning; datorseende; signalteknik; autonoma tåg; självkörande tåg.;

    Abstract : The main purpose of this Master Thesis is to investigate how front-facing, train-mounted cameras and Computer Vision, a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI), can be used to compensate for GPS inaccuracies. By using footage from track-recording cameras, Computer Vision can be utilized to determine the number of tracks and the track occupancy of the train, which would compensate GPS inaccuracies in the lateral positioning.
