Du Er Hvad Du Drikker - et antropologisk perspektiv på kaffe-konsumption i Danmark

University essay from Lunds universitet/Socialantropologi

Abstract: This study investigates the coffee culture in Denmark. By trying to answer this question: How do people use coffee to express, create and maintain identity? To examine this problem, different methods where included. Throughout this study I have used historical material to go through recent trends within coffee and used empirical material to analyse which symbolic aspects different kinds of coffee contain and how individuals consume these as a part of maintaining their self-identity in their aesthetic world; within this, discussing gender, proper taste and the ethical consumer. The results implicate that there is a clear differentiation between masculine and feminine coffee and that individuals can draw on gender as identification in their aesthetic world as well as ethics and proper taste.
