Learner Autonomy in English course books : To individualise or not to individualise

University essay from Akademin för utbildning och ekonomi

Abstract: This essay looks into the use of Learner Autonomy, LA, in three different English course books of the upper secondary school level as well as in the curriculum for the non-compulsory school system, Lpf94. The essay also holds a discussion about what LA entails with the help of studies conducted by known LA researchers. The main aim of the essay is to find out if working with course books can be a way to incorporate LA in the classroom. The results do show that the use of LA or its building blocks are present in all three books as well as in the Lpf94. As to the main aim of the essay this study cannot fault the use of course books as a way to achieve LA in the classroom. It does however stress how the teacher uses the course books as well as how the pupils use them.
