Abstract: The purpose of this literature review was from dairy cows’ behaviour and welfare point ofview describe how feed bunk and cubicles in a loose house system should be designed. Todaydairy cows in Sweden and in the world have high demands because of a high milk production,stress and higher risk of being afflicted with diseases. Through selection in breeding the bestquality can be performed, but high demands of the environment for the dairy cow is above allalso important for a good welfare and for a good milk production. Feed bunks and cubiclesare just some parts to be designed in the best way for a good animal welfare. The access ofwater and feed and the possibility for movement is some fundamental factors that must besupplied. Many individuals per feeding station give a more aggressive environment wherecows in lower ranking are pushed away. Feeding ad. lib. or more frequent feeding counteractsan aggressive behaviour of the animals and meet the daily rhythm and the motivation thatcows have for eating. A good design of cubicles is important, not just for the comfort for thecows but also for their health. A soft and clean bedding is what the cows prefer and it alsoreduces the risk of diseases. The bedding material and the design of the cubicles shallencourage the cows to spend their resting time there. By studying the movement of the cowsand evaluating their behaviour can cubicles and feed bunks can be designed in the best wayfor a good welfare of the cows.
