Formulation and evaluation of zolmitriptan fast
disintegrated tablets prepared by direct compression

University essay from Luleå/Hälsovetenskap

Abstract: The aim of this study was to study the effect of disintegrate type on the
characteristics of fast disintegrating sublingual tablets. It was also to
study the effect of applied pressure on disintegration time. Two tablet
formulations, A and B contain polyplasdone and sodium starch glycolate
respectively were prepared. Also, tablets from formulation B were prepared
at different pressure. Tablets were evaluated for weight variation, content
uniformity, thickness, diameter, friability and disintegration time. All
tablets were within the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) limits for weight
variation and content uniformity. The disintegration time fulfill the EP
requirements. The disintegration time of formulation A was faster than
formulation B. The applied pressure has a significant effect on tablet
disintegration. Polyplasdone is more efficient to promote fast
disintegration than starch. The pressure used for tablet preparation should
be optimized to meet the required disintegration time for tablet.
