Reading Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” as a Feminist Text

Abstract: This essay performs an in-depth analysis of the feminist patterns of “Hills Like White Elephants”. This reading reevaluates the text’s meaning and shows the reader that it in fact is a feminist text. I argue that if the text is read with this gender perspective in mind, it is clear that Jig succeeds in protecting her own unborn child. I also argue that HLWE is a true feminist text, since it shows us not only the power and will of a woman but it also strongly critiques the American and his manner of conducting himself. The text starts out with an introduction which is followed by an analysis of Jig’s point of view and a linguistic analysis of the text. The last part of the essay consists of a step by step close reading of  ”Hills Like White Elephants.”
