Majorana Neutrinos - Same Sign Di-Muon Investigations in 8 TeV Datasets with the BUMPHUNTER Algorithm

University essay from Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen; Lunds universitet/Partikel- och kärnfysik

Abstract: A hypertest-algorithm, the BUMPHUNTER, is introduced briefly and tested by probing events containing muons in 8 TeV datasets from the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN against a background spectrum created by selecting muons from different collisions. The hypertest looked for excesses of same sign di-muon pairs which could indicate the existence of a Majorana neutrino. The resulting spectrum did not constitute a reliable statistical background for the algorithm so no significant conclusion could be drawn from the BUMPHUNTER output. The algorithm proved both efficient, easy to use and appropriate for the high energy physics studies. Suggestions for improvements of the implementation that was used were: Improved ability to control output and to either guarantee output, or document how histograms that the algorithm cannot handle will affect the output such that the user can take appropriate error handling actions.
