Abstract: This essay examines in what way women are portrayed in The Da Vinci Code.
The first chapter is comparing women’s role in The Bible with what role The
Da Vinci Code gives to women in the Biblical history, and the difference is
immense. In The Bible women are mostly spectators to the greet deeds carried
out by men, while in The Da Vinci Code it is stated that women actually had
a much more prominent role. It is even suggested that it was a woman who was
to take over the Church after Jesus’ passing. The second chapter examines in
what way the symbols and rituals, which portray and describe women, reveal
views of women. When women are described through the use of symbols and
rituals this is always done in a positive manner and often as a way to
praise womanhood. The third chapter deals with how perspectives of women are
portrayed through one of the main characters, Sophie Neveu.
She is described as a woman of action who is strong and competent,
especially in her line of work at the French police force. Because of her
strong will and independence she is seen as a threat by her male
colleagues.

The view of women in The Da Vinci Code can overall be said to be very
positive. The author Dan Brown discusses many of the issues that have
influenced our way of looking at the female gender. He gives our Biblical
history a large role in this, and he means that the The Bible has sidelined
women and their important role. This in turn has led to the fact that women
today do not have the same position in society as men.
