Tablets and English Teaching: A Research Synthesis

University essay from Malmö universitet/Lärande och samhälle

Abstract: Society is becoming more and more technical, and so are our classrooms. Computers and tablets are replacing books in many ways. The devices are being used as a tool in all subjects in school. Tablets are making it possible for pupils to reach information at the touch of a button and be more independent. The purpose of this research synthesis is to explore advantages and challenges in the use of tablets in English language teaching in primary school. Some advantages are being connected to the Internet and being able to reach current information and talk to people across the world. Other advantages are multiple ways of handing in work and for teachers to be able to assess with the help of applications. Whilst there are many advantages, challenges are also apparent. For example, the use of mobile devices will not automatically make pupils learn more or be motivated. Learning outcomes and motivation comes with how the tablet is used, which depends on the teacher. Some are also concerned with pupils making the correlation that tablet means play, as tablets are often used for just that at home. It is vital to remember that tablets do not transform skills on their own.
