  1. 1. Finding the Seeds of Supermassive Black Holes: The Direct Collapse Black Hole Scenario

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för fysik och astronomi

    Author : Weihui Li; [2023]
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The origin of supermassive black holes (SMBHs,∼ 10^9M⊙) in the first billion years of cosmic history remains a mystery. Direct Collapse Black Holes (DCBHs,∼ 10^4M⊙) are considered one of the most promising hypotheses for the progenitor of SMBHs, as they are believed to provide a favorable starting point as massive seeds for SMBH formation. 2. 2. A study of the gamma-ray emission from the blazar S50716+71 using the Fermi-LAT telescope

    University essay from Linnéuniversitetet/Institutionen för fysik och elektroteknik (IFE)

    Author : Fredrik Vislander; [2022]
    Keywords : AGN; active galactic nuclei; Fermi-LAT; astrophysics; gamma-rays; synchrotron self-Compton; SSC; S50716 71.;

    Abstract : This thesis sums up a bachelor project in which gamma-ray emission from an extra-galactic source (S50716+71) is studied using data collected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). The emission consists of 12,5 years of data (April 2008 to February 2020) in the energy range 100 MeV - 300 GeV. READ MORE

  3. 3. Measuring the [C II]-to-H I connection in high-redshift absorption-selected galaxies

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation

    Author : Gaurav Senthil Kumar; [2022]
    Keywords : QSO; Quasar; Black Hole; AGN; Active Galactic Nuclei; DLA; Damped Lyman Alpha; C II; [C II]; H I; Sightline; HST; X-shooter; Spectroscopy; Echelle Spectroscope; Hyperfine transition; Hyperfine; Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : HI neutral gas is the basic building block of galaxies. It dictates the star formation rate and hence the metal enrichment rates within high redshift galaxies. HI neutral gas cannot be directly observed beyond z ≈ 0. READ MORE

  4. 4. Simulating and Testing the Polarimetric Response of the X-ray Polarimetry Telescope XL-Calibur

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Filip af Malmborg; [2022]
    Keywords : Astroparticle Physics; Astrophysics; Detector Physics; Simulation; Theoretical Physics; Engineering Physics; Astropartikelfysik; Astropartikelfysik; Detektorfysik; Simulering; Teoretisk Fysik; Teknisk Fysik;

    Abstract : X-ray polarimetry, the study of the polarisation of X-ray light, is a powerful and rapidly developing tool for astrophysics, which promises to help answer outstanding questions about the physics of extreme objects such as pulsars, X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. The balloon-borne telescope XL-Calibur will be the first instrument to study the polarisation of hard X-rays (with energies between 10 and 100 keV) in detail, correlating with the soft X-ray observations of IXPE to provide further tests of polarisation-dependent x-ray emission models in extreme objects. 5. 5. A gamma-ray study of a highly variable blazar : The Fermi-LAT analysis and the modeling of the FSRQ PKS 1510–089

    University essay from Linnéuniversitetet/Institutionen för fysik och elektroteknik (IFE)

    Author : Nadja Bollström; [2021]
    Keywords : active galactic nuclei; AGN; astrophysics; jet; PKS 1510-089; Fermi; external Compton model; gamma-rays;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the analysis and modeling of the active galactic nucleus PKS 1510-089. The aim is to present a thorough background of active galactic nuclei combined with the analysis and modeling of a specific active galactic nucleus. The results will then be  linked to previous research and theories about active galactic nuclei. READ MORE
