  1. 1. Seroprevalence of CCPP, FMDV, BTV and BVDV among small ruminants in Tanzania : A minor field study with focus on differential diagnoses of peste des petits ruminants virus

    University essay from SLU/Dept. of Clinical Sciences

    Author : Malin Päärni; [2016]
    Keywords : peste des petits ruminants virus; foot and mouth disease virus; bluetongue virus; bovine viral diarrhoea; border disease virus; contagious caprine pleuropneumonia; seroprevalence; Tanzania; sheep; goats;

    Abstract : This degree project has been performed as a Minor Field Study (MFS) in Tanzania, investigating the seroprevalence in goats and sheep of three diseases causing similar signs as peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV): foot and mouth disease (FMD), bluetongue (BT) and contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), as well as bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) and border disease (BDV) which is believed to affect an outbreak of PPR due to immunosuppression. Sheep and goats play a key role in national food and nutritional security, income security and livelihood resilience in the least economically developed countries across the world and because of the complicated epidemiology and socio-economic impact of these diseases it is of great interest to further evaluate the prevalence of PPRV and its differential diagnosis.     Keywords : Borna disease;

    Abstract : Borna disease is caused by Borna disease virus (BDV). This disease is characterised as a neurogical illness of the central nervous system (CNS), known to occur in several vertebrates like horses, cats and sheep. Cats mainly at the age of 1 to 4 years, living outdoors, have also been shown to subtract the BDV infection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Staggering disease in cats in Sweden : development of molecular methods for detection and genetic characterization of Borna disease virus strains

    University essay from SLU/Dept. of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health

    Author : Jessica Schenck; [2008]
    Keywords : BDV; borna disease virus; SD; staggering disease; RNA virus; virus; neurological disorder;

    Abstract : The aim of this project was to get clearer knowledge about the spread of Borna disease virus (BDV) by comparing sequences from BDV infected cats from different regions in Sweden. BDV is associated with staggering disease (SD), a feline neurological disorder that causes non-suppurative meningoencephalomyelitis. READ MORE
