    Abstract : In this paper I present a discourse analysis on the narrative and depiction of the Russia developmental, diplomatic, and military cooperation advancements in the African continent in Western media, and its consequences on the general public. Through the analysis of 31 articles from 8 different newspapers from Italy, Sweden, the UK, and the US, and through the theoretical lens of theories of Western media and the phenomenon of othering and orientalism, I reach the conclusion that Western narrative regarding Russia’s advancements in Africa changes based on whether Russia is perceived as succeeding or failing, with a constant undertext that the West is not happy about eventual deepening relations between Russia and the continent.     Abstract : Based on the understanding that Mali and Russia will be unable to contain the jihadist security threat in Mali, this paper explains why France withdrew from Mali in 2022 and why the latter intensified its cooperation with Russia. Existing literature points to operational obstacles and grievances directed towards France’s presence in Mali, however, it falls short of explaining whether these are explanatory for France’s withdrawal, or why France wouldn’t have left earlier considering these hurdles.     Abstract : The special meaning of the UN-EU relations characterized not only by symbolic significance but also in terms of legitimization and especially growing financial importance, complemented by the findings of previous literature on business organizations underscoring the value of informal relationships, led me devote this thesis to the perceived importance of social capital in the UN-EU relations. In line with existing theories of social capital which argue that the interpersonal side of relationships can lead to advantages, pointing at the same time to some favorable conditions such as trust, obligations and expectations, and relational embeddedness that need to be fulfilled for a relationship to become meaningful, this study aims to analyze the perceptions of the individuals involved in the informal relationships between the UN and the EU on the relevance of these relational social capital conditions.
