1. Can't Stay Away: What happens to social distancing and vaccination rates when a far-right party wins seats on your local council? Case study of the 2021 Finnish Municipality Election
University essay from Handelshögskolan i Stockholm/Institutionen för nationalekonomiAbstract : With Covid-19 as the backdrop, this paper takes advantage of a timely municipal election in Finland, where the Finn's party, stole council seats from almost every other party in almost every municipality to study questions such as: Is there a link between votes for a populist party and social distancing or vaccination take-up? Will there be a post election difference in social distancing and vaccination rates in regions in which the Finn's party suddenly holds more seats in municipal councils, endowed with the power to influence Covid-19 restrictions and the organisations of vaccinations? Using Google mobility data, the paper finds that social distancing tended to be higher in regions with more Finn's party voters, even when controlling for demographic and time-specific variables. On the other hand, Finn's voters were associated with lower vaccination rates. READ MORE
