  1. 1. Comparing radar satellites. Use of Sentinel-1 leads to an increase in oil spill alerts in Norwegian waters

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Ove Njøten; [2021]
    Keywords : Geography; GIS; Satellite; Radar; Oil spill; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Radar’s ability to detect oil spills through clouds, fog, and darkness is a significant advantage. Oil spill alert services using radar satellites have been in use in Norway for more than 25 years. After introducing two radar satellites Sentinel-1A and 1B in 2015-2016, the number of oil spill alerts has increased by 250% in Norwegian waters. READ MORE

  2. 2. Vegetation phenology derived using the plant phenology index and the normalized difference vegetation index for the Balkan peninsula, south-eastern Europe

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Aleksandra Ivanova; [2019]
    Keywords : physical geography; ecosystem analysis; phenology; vegetation; climate change; remote sensing; plant phenology index; PPI; timesat; Balkan peninsula; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : This study analyses the performance of the satellite derived Plant Phenology Index (PPI) against the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for estimating start of season (SOS) and end of season (EOS) of vegetation growth in part of the Balkan Peninsula, Southeastern Europe (2000 – 2016). Results revealed that PPI and NDVI differ considerably; SOS and EOS may diverge by more than one month between the two indices. READ MORE

  3. 3. Comparison of multi-temporal and multispectral Sentinel-2 and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle imagery for crop type mapping

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Stephania Zabala Ramos; [2017]
    Keywords : classification; Random Forest; precision agriculture; UAV; remote sensing; Micasense; GEM; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Precision Agriculture aims to maximize crop production and the efficiency of land use to meet the increased demand for food while minimizing environmental impact and economic cost of food production. Crop type maps are needed for Precision Agriculture applications and remote sensing techniques are an efficient way to produce this information. READ MORE

  4. 4. Monitoring of Santorini (Greece) volcano during post-unrest period (2014-2016) with Interferometric Time series of Sentinel-1A

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Christos Bountzouklis; [2016]
    Keywords : Santorini Volcanic Complex; earth observation; volcanic hazard; SAR Interferometry; Sentinel-1A; physical geography and ecosystem science; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Ground deformation monitoring is one of the main geoindicators that should be considered to assess volcanic hazard. Satellite earth observation data and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry have been used continuously since 1992 to measure or study the temporal evolution of surface deformation in volcanic areas in conjunction with ground-based geodetic measurements. 5. 5. Combining hyperspectral UAV and mulitspectral FORMOSAT-2 imagery for precision agriculture applications

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Caroline Gevaert; [2014]
    Keywords : Physical Geography and Ecosystem analysis; GIS; precision agriculture; crop monitoring; data fusion; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Precision agriculture requires detailed information regarding the crop status variability within a field. Remote sensing provides an efficient way to obtain such information through observing biophysical parameters, such as canopy nitrogen content, leaf coverage, and plant biomass. READ MORE
