  1. 1. Investigation of coarse-grid CFD approach for nuclear engineering application

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Michela Casarella; [2023]
    Keywords : Thermal-hydraulics; Nuclear reactor; CFD; Sub-channel; Coarse-grid; Turbulence; Pressure drop; Termisk-hydraulik; kärnreaktor; CFD; underkanal; grovkornigt nät; turbulens; tryckfall;

    Abstract : In this thesis, an innovative coarse grid CFD approach is developed that aims toexploit the capabilities of sub-channel codes and CFD methods while overcoming theirlimitations. In the approach, a very coarse mesh is implemented in the CFD softwareOpenFOAM and a new wall treatment, based on the traditional concept of the wallfunction, is applied to the wall boundary conditions of the domain to take into accountthe low resolution of the grid which does not allow to effectively capture the effect of thesolid walls on the thermo-hydraulics of the flow. 2. 2. BWR Reactor Fuel Channel Manufacturing Simulations

    University essay from KTH/Hållfasthetslära

    Author : Kalle Norell; [2022]
    Keywords : Bending; Boiling water reactor; Fuel channel; FEM; Bockning; Kokvattenreaktor; Höljerör; FEM;

    Abstract : Fuel channels are used to keep the components of a nuclear fuel bundle in place. The fuel channel of a new nuclear fuel which is being developed at Westinghouse has a complex geometry which creates challenges in the manufacturing process. FE simulations were developed of a two-stage forming process of the fuel channel. READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of the endurance test program and the assembly fixture for TRITON11™

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Innovation

    Author : William Lundström; [2016]
    Keywords : Nuclear fuel; Boiling Water Reactor; fretting wear; test program; assembly fixture; Technology and Engineering;

    Abstract : The engineers at Westinghouse Electric Company have developed a new nuclear fuel design called TRITON11™, which will be used in Boiling Water Reactors (BWR). This project has been to develop a test program and an assembly fixture for TRITON11™. The test program can not be fully presented in this repport due to confidentiality. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nuclear Fuel Bundle Design Optimization using a Simplex Method

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Kärnfysik; Lunds universitet/Fysiska institutionen

    Author : Anders Haulin; [2014]
    Keywords : Optimization; Simplex; BWR; Fuel Bundle; Nuclear Power.; Physics and Astronomy; Technology and Engineering;

    Abstract : A strategy for nuclear fuel bundle design optimization in boiling water reactors(BWRs), using a simplex method, is presented and examined. The objective of the study is to see how an automatic optimization scheme can create nuclear designs for use in BWR fuel bundles and how the scheme can be improved. READ MORE

  5. 5. Solar-driven Hydrogen Production by the use of MIEC Membranes : A Techno-Economic Assessment

    University essay from KTH/Energiteknik

    Author : Mattias Nilsson; [2012]
    Keywords : Ceramic; MIEC; Solar; CSP; water splitting; hydrogen; thermochemical process;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises an assessment of a novel concept to produce high purity hydrogen using mixed oxide ion/electronic conductor (MIEC) membranes and energy provided by solar concentrators (i.e. parabolic troughs or parabolic dishes). READ MORE
