  1. 21. Climate Variability and Interstate Conflict : In the Arctic Region

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för freds- och konfliktforskning

    Author : Anna Svedin; [2022]
    Keywords : climate variability; interstate conflict; militarized interstate incidents; Arctic;

    Abstract : This thesis draws on the climate-conflict research field to explore the question how does climate variability affect interstate conflict? This thesis contributes to various gaps in previous research by studying interstate conflict while most climate-conflict research investigates internal conflict, by using a new operationalization of climate variability as sea ice extent, and by studying an understudied case, the Arctic region. The theoretical argument consists of two parallel processes, a background mechanism focused on long-term climate change and a main mechanism focused on short-term climate variability. READ MORE

  2. 22. Ionospheric Effect on GPS During Solar Maximum

    University essay from KTH/Fastigheter och byggande

    Author : Netsai Wiboonwipa; [2021]
    Keywords : GPS; Ionosphere; MS-TIDs; Polar cap patches; GPS; jonosfär; MS-TID; polarkåpor;

    Abstract : Ionospheric effects are one of the factors that can have negative impact on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). Those effects can be called medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MS-TIDs) at middle latitude regions and polar cap patches at high latitude regions. READ MORE

  3. 23. Open Source Grid Expansion Models for the EU Project Spine

    University essay from KTH/Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS)

    Author : Akshaya Tammanur Ravi; [2021]
    Keywords : Expansion Planning; Renewable Energy Sources; Operational Variability; Representative Days; Long-term Uncertainties; Stochastic Optimization; Utbyggnadsplanering; Förnybara energikällor; Variabel driftsituation; Representativa dagar; Långsiktiga osäkerheter; Stokastisk optimering;

    Abstract : Modern power systems are at the forefront of addressing the transition towards a decarbonized energy system, with increased integration of renewable energy sources becoming the key means to achieve the same. In this context, an expansion planning problem provides a decision support framework for investments in new generation and transmission assets over a long time-frame, addressing a wide range of technical and economic criteria aligned with national policies. Abstract : The bullwhip effect is defined as an upstream amplification of demand variability and has received interest within multinational companies for decades. As early as in the 1950’s, Forrester (1958) discussed what is today known as the bullwhip effect, which has a negative impact on the customer service, costs, and inventory investment in a supply chain (Lee et al. 5. 25. Using blue light reflectance from high-resolution images (6000 dpi) of Scots pine tree rings to reconstruct three centuries of Scottish summer temperatures

    University essay from KTH/Hållbar utveckling, miljövetenskap och teknik

    Author : Alice De Schutter; Karin Markendahl; [2021]
