  1. 1. Reconstruction of Fire Spread with a Markov Random Field Mixture Model

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Matematisk statistik

    Author : Marcus Gehrmann; [2023]
    Keywords : Forest fire; fire scars; spatial statistics; Markov random field; EM-algorithm; pseudo-likelihood; Mathematics and Statistics;

    Abstract : This thesis revolves around reconstructing fire sizes for historical fires in Jämtgaveln, Sweden based on data of fire scars in trees. We propose a Hidden Markov Model (HMM), where the domain is divided into quadratic grid cells of 250 $\times$ 250 m and with these grid cells we associate a binary Markov random field taking values 0 or 1 corresponding to no fire and fire respectively. 2. 2. Moving in the dark : Mathematics of complex pedestrian flows

    University essay from Karlstads universitet/Fakulteten för hälsa, natur- och teknikvetenskap (from 2013)

    Author : Meghashyam Veluvali; [2023]
    Keywords : Mathematical modelling of pedestrian dynamics; stochastic systems; evacuation time; random walk method; parabolic equation; finite difference method;

    Abstract : The field of mathematical modelling for pedestrian dynamics has attracted significant scientific attention, with various models proposed from perspectives such as kinetic theory, statistical mechanics, game theory and partial differential equations. Often such investigations are seen as being a part of a new branch of study in the domain of applied physics, called sociophysics. READ MORE

  3. 3. Spatial Statistical Modelling of Insurance Claim Frequency

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Matematisk statistik

    Author : Daniel Faller; [2022]
    Keywords : Insurance risk; claim frequency; Markov chain Monte Carlo MCMC ; Riemann manifold Metropolis adjusted Langevin algorithm MMALA ; spatial statistics; Gaussian Markov random field GMRF ; preconditioned Crank Nicolson Langevin algorithm pCNL ; Gibbs sampling; Bayesian hierarchical modelling; high dimensional; shrinkage prior; horseshoe prior; regularisation.; Mathematics and Statistics;

    Abstract : In this thesis a fully Bayesian hierarchical model that estimates the number of aggregated insurance claims per year for non-life insurances is constructed using Markov chain Monte Carlo based inference with Riemannian Langevin diffusion. Some versions of the model incorporate a spatial effect, viewed as the relative spatial insurance risk that originates from a policyholder's geographical location and where the relative spatial insurance risk is modelled as a continuous spatial field. 4. 4. A Study on Data-driven Methods for Selection and Evaluation of Beam Subsets in 5G NR

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för elektro- och informationsteknik

    Author : Nic Ekman; Ilias Theodoros Skordas; [2022]
    Keywords : 5G; NR; telecom; telecommunications; ML; machine learning; algorithms; beam; widebeam; propagation; beamforming; subset; RAN; radio; radio environment; ericsson; Technology and Engineering;

    Abstract : 5G New Radio is the next generation of mobile networks and it comes with promises of ultra-high speeds, ultra-high reliability and ultra-low latency. This has posed a challenge for the engineers entrusted with the task of finding solutions which could fulfil the specification, and as a result, some promising areas have received increased attention in recent years. 5. 5. Reconstruction of past European land cover from pollen data: using spatial statistics and Crank-Nicolson Monte Carlo

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Matematisk statistik

    Author : Lovisa Svensson; [2019]
    Keywords : Pollen data; compositional data; Dirichlet distribution; spatio-temporal reconstruction; Kronecker product; Gaussian Markov random field GMRF ; Markov Chain Monte Carlo MCMC ; Metropolis Hastings MH ; Metropolis adjusted Langevin algorithm MALA ; Mathematics and Statistics;

    Abstract : Given a pollen data set from Europe over a time period, the aim is to reconstruct the past land cover by interpolating from the pollen data values to a continuous map. The data is on compositional form with three vegetation categories; coniferous forest, broadleaved forest and open land. READ MORE
