  2. 12. Hg concentration in humus soils in different Arctic and Subarctic tundra vegetation types : Including a method comparison for analyzing metals in humus soils

    University essay from

    Author : Alice Sandvärn; [2022]
    Keywords : Hg concentration; vegetation types; Arctic tundra; elevation gradient; XRF;

    Abstract : Heavy metals, such as mercury (Hg), have a long residence time in the atmosphere and can be transported long distances and deposited in the Arctic via wet and dry deposition. Still, there are few studies on the complex mercury cycle and how different plant groups absorb Hg. READ MORE

  3. 13. Determination of bio-accessible amounts of metal trace elements in baby food using In vitro artificial digestion

    University essay from Örebro universitet/Institutionen för naturvetenskap och teknik

    Author : Marcus Andersson; [2022]
    Keywords : Food; toxic metals; children; bio-accumulation; artificial digestion; ICP-MS;

    Abstract : Prefabricated baby food is under strict EU legislation by Commission Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 Setting maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs regarding the maximum allowed content of potentially harmful elements. For potentially toxic trace elements the regulated maximum content is regulated for lead, cadmium, mercury, inorganic tin, inorganic arsenic, cesium, copper and manganese. READ MORE

  4. 14. Analysis of polyfunctional thiols in beer : Developing a novel method of extraction and analysis using GC-FID

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Livsmedelsteknik och nutrition (master)

    Author : Arvid Lindmark; [2022]
    Keywords : Beer; Hops; Thiols; 3MHA; 4MMP; Food Technology; Agriculture and Food Sciences;

    Abstract : In this project, attempts were made to identify and quantify two polyfunctional thiols – 4-mercapto-4-methyl-pentanone and 3-mercaptohexyl acetate – and three monoterpene alcohols – linalool, geraniol, and β-citronellol – in beer samples. In order to avoid the use of hazardous compounds such as dichloromethane and hydroxymercuriobenzoate, common in traditional methods, two novel techniques were tested: a pure liquid-liquid extraction of the beer samples with cyclohexane, and a liquid-liquid extraction with cyclohexane followed by solid phase extraction on silver ion columns. 5. 15. Inhibited surface-thiols in Geobacter sulfurreducens : Mercury uptake and methylation rates

    University essay from Umeå universitet/Kemiska institutionen

    Author : Andreas Granström; [2021]
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Due to daily human (anthropogenic) industrial activity, a lot of elemental mercury (Hg0) has been released to the atmosphere. The mercury can then spread globally, since mercury has the ability to remain atmospheric for up to a year. When mercury deposits, it can end up in anaerobic environments such as sediments and soil.
