  1. 1. Seasonal changes in clupeids maturation constrains the food quality of chicks of the common guillemot (Uria aalge) : A case study of a potential mismatch, from the perspective of the common guillemot chicks on Stora Karlsö, the Baltic Sea

    University essay from Stockholms universitet/Stockholm Resilience Centre

    Author : Emelie Delphin; [2018]
    Keywords : Common guillemot Uria aalge ; Sprat Sprattus sprattus ; Herring Clupea herengus ; Match-mismatch hypothesis; the Baltic Sea;

    Abstract : Background: Common guillemots are integral elements of the Baltic Sea marine ecosystem. They possess life-history characteristics such as relatively long lifespan, quite low fecundity resulting in only one egg per breeding season – characteristics that make them particularly vulnerable to even small changes in the environment. 2. 2. Diet overlap between Cod (Gadus morhua) and European Flounder (Platichthys flesus) in the central Baltic Sea

    University essay from SLU/Dept. Of Aquatic Resources

    Author : Kevin Haase; [2018]
    Keywords : diet overlap; diet; cod; gadus morhua; flounder; platichthys flesus; Baltic Sea;

    Abstract : The Baltic Sea is a frontrunner in ecosystem analysis and assessment, which have been used also in multispecies fisheries management advice. In the Baltic Sea, the multispecies assessment and management advice have been focused on the pelagic interactions between cod (Gadus morhua), sprat (Sprattus sprattus) and herring (Clupea harengus), by virtue of their well-known ecology. 3. 3. Otolith morphology of sprat (Sprattus sprattus) along the Swedish west coast

    University essay from SLU/Dept. Of Aquatic Resources

    Author : Francesco Saltalamacchia; [2018]
    Keywords : European sprat; Otolith; shape analysis; wavelet;

    Abstract : The population structure of sprat (Sprattus sprattus) in the Swedish Kattegat – Skagerrak has been at present not well investigated, and the boundaries between the management unit in this region and the larger stock occurring in the North Sea are also highly uncertain, posing issues to the successful management of the stock in this area. In this study, variations in otolith shape among several samples from the Swedish west coast, southern North Sea and Norwegian fjords north of Bergen were studied to investigate the effectiveness of shape analysis for characterise the population structure in the study area, and evaluate whether differences could be used to assign individual fish to their origin. 4. 4. Changes in condition of herring (Clupea harengus) in Swedish coastal waters

    University essay from Institutionen för livsvetenskaper

    Author : Martin Persson; [2010]
    Keywords : Herring Clupea harengus ; Fulton’s condition index; environmental changes; Baltic Sea;

    Abstract : The condition of the herring (Clupea harengus) in the Baltic Sea has decreased during the past 30-40 years. This decrease could be explained by different factors; (1) change in diet due to changes in zooplankton community, (2) changes in water temperature and salinity, (3) increasing nutrient inputs and (4) competition for food with other species such as sprat (Sprattus sprattus). 5. 5. What is the estimated total catch of Swedish fishing in the Baltic Sea 1950-2007?

    University essay from SLU/Dept. of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies

    Author : Lo Persson; [2009]
    Keywords : fisheries; Baltic Sea; IUU; discards; recreational; catches; cod;

    Abstract : Fisheries around the world have a substantial impact on marine ecosystems through the removal of biomass and modification of habitats, which alters the conditions within food webs. However, our understanding of this impact and consequences for the ecosystems is limited. READ MORE
