  1. 1. Ultraluminous sources in X-ray sky surveys

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Högenergifysik

    Author : Miquel Colom i Bernadich; [2020]
    Keywords : X-rays; X-ray astronomy; black holes; neutron stars; accretion physics; XMM-Newton; eROSITA;

    Abstract : Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are extragalactic, non-nuclear, point-like X-ray sources whose luminosity supersedes that of the Eddington limit of an accreting stellar mass black hole (L> 10 ^ 39 erg / s). Most of them are powered by black holes and neutron stars undergoing genuine super-Eddington accretion, with a small handful of candidates being consistent with sub-Eddington accretion on an intermediate mass black hole. 2. 2. Investigating super-Eddington accretion flows in Ultraluminous X-ray sources

    University essay from Luleå tekniska universitet/Rymdteknik

    Author : Andrés Gúrpide Lasheras; [2018]
    Keywords : Accretion; X-ray binaries; Black holes; Neutron Stars; Ultraluminous X-ray sources;

    Abstract : It is now widely known that most of the large galaxies we observe (e.g. the Milky Way) host in their center a supermassive black hole ($10^{6}-10^{9}$ $M_\odot$). READ MORE

  3. 3. The possible impact of Intermediate Mass Black Holes on our Galaxy

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för astronomi och teoretisk fysik - Genomgår omorganisation; Lunds universitet/Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation

    Author : Wilhelm Krüger; [2014]
    Keywords : Physics and Astronomy;

    Abstract : Orbit integration for three different assumed Intermediate-mass Black Hole (IMBH, defined as black holes with mass MBH in the range 100Mo < MBH 104Mo) populations in the Milky Way for 10 Gyr has been performed. Upon collision with molecular clouds in the galactic disc, the relative velocity between both objects has been measured and the luminosity resulting from the gas accretion process onto the IMBH has been modeled.
