  1. 1. Insights Into Wind Profile Characteristics in the Arctic Marine Boundary Layer

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Luft-, vatten- och landskapslära

    Author : Charlotte Sophie Gausa; [2024]
    Keywords : Arctic; wind profile power law; MOST; boundary layer; low level jets; sea ice; vindprofil; Arktis; gränsskikt; vindenergi; låghöjdsvindar; havsis;

    Abstract : The atmospheric boundary layer in the Arctic is essential for the understanding of climate change and improving regional weather prediction. The aim of this study is to investigate to which degree wind speed profiles retrieved in the Arctic agree with well known wind profile concepts and understand which local impact factors influence the wind speed profile. 2. 2. Testing aerosol vertical profiling methods with portable instruments on unmanned and manned aircraft

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Ellen Grace Soroka; [2023]
    Keywords : Physical Geography; Ecosystem Analysis; Aerosols; Vertical Profile; Black Carbon; PM2.5; Nanoparticles; UAV; Drone; Master degree thesis; 30 credits in Atmospheric Science Biogeochemical Cycles; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : This thesis employed several portable sensors on board an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and manned aircraft in order to test new methods of measuring vertical profiles of aerosol particles and contribute to knowledge of aerosol distributions in the atmosphere. More data in this area is required to improve atmospheric modelling and future climate scenarios. READ MORE

  3. 3. Verification and validation of the implementation of an Algebraic Reynolds-Stress Model for stratified boundary layers

    University essay from KTH/Teknisk mekanik

    Author : Martina Formichetti; [2022]
    Keywords : Atmospheric boundary layer; turbulence modelling; stratified flows; eddy viscosity; eddy diffusivity;

    Abstract : This thesis studies the implementation of an Explicit Algebraic Reynolds-Stress Model(EARSM) for Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) in an open source ComputationalFluid Dynamics (CFD) software, OpenFOAM, following the guidance provided by thewind company ENERCON that aims to make use of this novel model to improvesites’ wind-field predictions. After carefully implementing the model in OpenFOAM,the EARSM implementation is verified and validated by testing it with a stratifiedCouette flow case. READ MORE

  4. 4. A Comparison of Statistical Methods to Generate Short-Term Probabilistic Forecasts for Wind Power Production Purposes in Iceland

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Luft-, vatten- och landskapslära

    Author : Arnór Tumi Jóhannsson; [2022]
    Keywords : Wind power; Iceland; Atmospheric Boundary Layer; atmospheric stability; probabilistic forecasting; Machine Learning; Quantile Regression Forest; Vindkraft; Island; gränsskikt; atmosfärisk stabilitet; probabilistisk prognos; Machine Learning; Quantile Regression Forest;

    Abstract : Accurate forecasts of wind speed and power production are of great value for wind power producers. In Southwest Iceland, wind power installations are being planned by various entities. READ MORE

  5. 5. Evaluation of a stochastic model of coherent turbulent structures for atmospheric particle deposition applications

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Luft-, vatten- och landskapslära

    Author : Andreas Eriksson; [2022]
    Keywords : atmospheric dispersion; particle deposition; k-epsilon; RANS; lagrangian particle model; stochastic particle model; OpenFOAM; SIMPLE algorithm; ABL; atmospheric boundary layer; neutral boundary layer; coherent turbulent structures;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we have evaluated a stochastic Lagrangian model for computing particle deposition rates with prospects to use for atmospheric deposition applications.  The model is one-dimensional and models the particle dynamics in the boundary layers near walls and obstacles by simulating the coherent turbulent structures and Brownian motion governing the wall-normal transport.
