11. Providing live black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae to laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) using three different methods : effects on foraging behaviour and production parameters
University essay from SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and ManagementAbstract : Feather pecking is a major welfare issue in commercial egg production. Feather pecking is thought to be a form of re-directed foraging pecking behaviour. When hens are deprived of the necessary conditions to perform foraging behaviour the risk of developing feather pecking increases. READ MORE

12. Integrating novel circular economy technologies in complex trans-sector value chains : Case study of insect larvae conversion technology within waste and feed value chains
University essay from KTH/Hållbar utveckling, miljövetenskap och teknikAbstract : Even as the current linear value chains (LVC) of organic waste and animal feed hold the potential to become circular, these practices continue to pose major environmental risks such as deforestation and overfishing. Therefore, a novel circular value chain (CVC) is proposed, connecting the organic waste stream with animal feed production by the use of insect-based organic waste conversion technology. READ MORE

13. Fly larvae composting of fibrous food industry waste : impact of pre-treatment
University essay from SLU/Department of Molecular SciencesAbstract : With increasing population worldwide comes higher demands of food and greater waste generation. Effective ways for safe nutrient recycling and waste treatment are thus needed to minimize the human impact on the environment. READ MORE

READ MORE

15. Baltic blue mussel (Mytilus edulis L.) and black soldier fly (Hermetia. illucens) combined with pea protein concentrate as protein sources in feed for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
University essay from SLU/Dept. of Animal Nutrition and ManagementAbstract : A feeding trial was conducted for 9 weeks to test the growth performance, nutrient retention and digestibility in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in order to assess the potential of Baltic blue mussel meal (Mytilus edulis L) and black solider fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) meal as protein sources. The dietary treatments consisted of one control diet based on high quality fishmeal, one control diet based on pea protein concentrate for testing dietary palatability and two fishmeal-free experimental diets where approximately 20% of the crude protein from the fishmeal was replaced with the protein from either de-shelled blue mussel meal or larvae meal on a dry matter basis.
