  1. 1. Analysis of polyfunctional thiols in beer : Developing a novel method of extraction and analysis using GC-FID

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Livsmedelsteknik och nutrition (master)

    Author : Arvid Lindmark; [2022]
    Keywords : Beer; Hops; Thiols; 3MHA; 4MMP; Food Technology; Agriculture and Food Sciences;

    Abstract : In this project, attempts were made to identify and quantify two polyfunctional thiols – 4-mercapto-4-methyl-pentanone and 3-mercaptohexyl acetate – and three monoterpene alcohols – linalool, geraniol, and β-citronellol – in beer samples. In order to avoid the use of hazardous compounds such as dichloromethane and hydroxymercuriobenzoate, common in traditional methods, two novel techniques were tested: a pure liquid-liquid extraction of the beer samples with cyclohexane, and a liquid-liquid extraction with cyclohexane followed by solid phase extraction on silver ion columns. 2. 2. Inhibited surface-thiols in Geobacter sulfurreducens : Mercury uptake and methylation rates

    University essay from Umeå universitet/Kemiska institutionen

    Author : Andreas Granström; [2021]
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Due to daily human (anthropogenic) industrial activity, a lot of elemental mercury (Hg0) has been released to the atmosphere. The mercury can then spread globally, since mercury has the ability to remain atmospheric for up to a year. When mercury deposits, it can end up in anaerobic environments such as sediments and soil. 3. 3. Biochar-based thin-layer capping of contaminated sediment in Burefjärden, northern Sweden : Assessment of biochar mixed into four structural materials for preventing release of trace elements from sediment to water

    University essay from Luleå tekniska universitet/Institutionen för samhällsbyggnad och naturresurser

    Author : Nathalie Pantzare; [2021]
    Keywords : biochar; contaminated sediment; remediation; thin-layer capping;

    Abstract : Coastal areas around the world have been recognized as largely impacted by anthropogenic activities resulting in pollution of marine sediments. In Sweden, surveys conducted along the coastline of the Bothnian Bay have identified a total area of about 29 km2 as fiber rich sediments. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mercury and methyl mercury release in soil and water - their relationship with different properties in Skogaryd

    University essay from Göteborgs universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Author : Linnéa Johansson; [2020-07-08]
    Keywords : mercury; methylmercury; demethylation; pH; dissolved oxygen and total organic content;

    Abstract : In Skogaryd research site, water samples were taken and analysed for total mercury (Hgtot) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentration along with the pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) and total organic content (TOC). This to give the condition of the site before the forest is clear-cute and a part of the land rewetted to a wetland. READ MORE

  5. 5. Influence of logging residues on MeHg accumulation in soil

    University essay from KTH/Hållbar utveckling, miljövetenskap och teknik

    Author : Axel Blomgren; [2018]
    Keywords : Mercury methylation; Forestry; Dissolved organic matter; Soil temperature; Soil water content;

    Abstract : Forestry has been found to increase the accumulation of methyl mercury (MeHg), a highly neurotoxic compound, in forest soils. However, little is known about how forestry influences catchment processes that governs the mercury (Hg) methylation process. READ MORE
