  1. 1. Evaluating the effects of climate change on Arctic char : including impacts of brown trout competition

    University essay from SLU/Dept. of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies

    Author : Ola Carlström; [2023]
    Keywords : arctic char; brown trout; climate change; diet; habitat use; temperature;

    Abstract : Climate change is predicted to increase the average global temperature with 1.5 °C between 2030 and 2052. The areas that are most vulnerable for climate change are the arctic regions. Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) is a cold-water salmonid species with the most northern distribution of all freshwater fish species. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Great cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo, as a predator of the invasive Round goby

    University essay from SLU/Dept. Of Aquatic Resources

    Author : Louisa Alvarez Blomgren; [2023]
    Keywords : Round goby; invasive species; Great cormorant; predator-prey interaction; prey selectivity;

    Abstract : Dispersal of invasive species poses a significant threat to biodiversity loss globally and is one of the major threats to the ecological condition in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is facing potential problems caused by the Round goby, Neogobius melanostomus, which was presumably introduced via ballast water. READ MORE

  3. 3. Novel Scale Chemistry of Salmo Salar L. : New Linkage of Otolith and Scale Chemistry to M74 Reproductive Disorder

    University essay from Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för medicinsk biokemi och mikrobiologi

    Author : Michelle Von Ehr; [2022]
    Keywords : Thiamine; M74; Salmon; Otolith chemistry; Scale chemistry; laser-ablation coupled inductively plasma mass spectrometry;

    Abstract : Baltic salmon suffer from maternally transmitted M74 reproductive disorder, which causes yolk-sac fry mortality due to thiamine deficiency. This study investigates trace elemental analyses of Baltic salmon applied on otoliths and scales and their possible link to identifying M74. READ MORE

  4. 4. Can cormorants be used as indicators of local fish abundances? : A diet study of cormorants on Gotland

    Author : Oliver Kai Hansen; [2021]
    Keywords : cormorants; Baltic; Gotland; human-wildlife conflict;

    Abstract : Human wildlife conflicts can represent missed opportunities for ecological monitoring, including tracking invasive species. The great cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis is the centre such a conflict, where the lack of concrete scientific evidence is often replaced by anecdotal evidence, leading to the vilification of these birds. 5. 5. Otolith morphology of sprat (Sprattus sprattus) along the Swedish west coast

    University essay from SLU/Dept. Of Aquatic Resources

    Author : Francesco Saltalamacchia; [2018]
    Keywords : European sprat; Otolith; shape analysis; wavelet;

    Abstract : The population structure of sprat (Sprattus sprattus) in the Swedish Kattegat – Skagerrak has been at present not well investigated, and the boundaries between the management unit in this region and the larger stock occurring in the North Sea are also highly uncertain, posing issues to the successful management of the stock in this area. In this study, variations in otolith shape among several samples from the Swedish west coast, southern North Sea and Norwegian fjords north of Bergen were studied to investigate the effectiveness of shape analysis for characterise the population structure in the study area, and evaluate whether differences could be used to assign individual fish to their origin.
