  1. 1. Estimation of dissolved organic carbon from inland waters using remote sensing data and machine learning

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Lasse Harkort; [2022]
    Keywords : dissolved organic carbon; machine learning; remote sensing; inland waters; water quality; open source data; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : This thesis presents the first attempt to estimate Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) in inland waters over a large-scale area using satellite data and machine learning (ML) methods. Four ML approaches, namely Random Forest Regression (RFR), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and a Multilayer Backpropagation Neural Network (MBPNN) were tested to retrieve DOC using a filtered version of the recently published open source AquaSat dataset with more than 16 thousand samples across the continental US matched with satellite data from Landsat 5, 7 and 8 missions. 2. 2. Assessing the suitability of using Sentinel-1A SAR multi-temporal imagery to detect fallow periods between rice crops

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Lukasz Langowski; [2021]
    Keywords : Geography; Geographical Information System; GIS; Remote Sensing; Fallow; Detection; Sentinel-1A; Synthetic-aperture radar; SAR; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Fallow, understood as a period where no crop is cultivated during a growing season, is an important crop management practice. Fallow plays an important role in pest and disease management, and monitoring the presence and duration of fallow can have implications for understanding the extent and effectiveness of this agricultural practice. 3. 3. Effects of armed conflict on forest cover and vegetation seasonality in Cambodia

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : David Ebert; [2021]
    Keywords : conflict; forest cover; vegetation seasonality; NDVI; remote sensing; Cambodia; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : Armed conflicts have definitive wide-ranging and diverse impacts on the environment. This thesis examines associations between conflict and land cover change in Cambodia, focusing on the last decade (1989 - 1998) of a thirty-year long Civil War. READ MORE

  4. 4. Evaluation of water stress mapping methods in vineyards using airborne thermal imaging

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap

    Author : Alon Zuta; [2020]
    Keywords : Geography; Geographical information systems; GIS; Remote sensing; Cover crop; Thermal imaging; Spatial variability; vineyards; interpolation; water stress index; CWSI; Ig; stem water potential; UAV; Rheingau; Interpolation.; Agriculture and Food Sciences; Biology and Life Sciences; Technology and Engineering; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Abstract : With low cost and high efficiency, use of airborne infrared thermography imaging from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has become a widely used technique to measure plant water stress. With that, the use of UAV mounted thermal camera as a precision agriculture technique to map crop water stress is not trivial and its success is depended on variety of factors which are still needed to be studied and understood.
