  1. 1. Gravitational Collapse of a Massless Scalar Field in a Theory of Minimally Modified Gravity

    University essay from KTH/Fysik

    Author : Atabak Fathe Jalali; [2024]
    Keywords : Theoretical physics; astrophysics; modified gravity; minimally modified gravity; gravitational collapse; VCDM; scalar collapse; apparent horizon; numerical relativity; Teoretisk fysik; astrofysik; modifierad gravitation; minimalt modifierad gravitation; gravitationskollaps; VCDM; skalär kollaps; uppenbar horisont; numerisk relativitet;

    Abstract : This thesis explores the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in a minimally modified gravity theory denoted VCDM (V replaces $\Lambda$ in the $\Lambda$CDM abbreviation), a class of theories propagating the same degrees of freedom as general relativity at the expense of broken 4D diffeomorphism invariance. Numerical evolution of the equations of motion reveals that for small initial scalar profile amplitudes, no black hole forms from the collapse. READ MORE

  2. 2. Water quality improvement of highway runoff by the filter material D-Rainclean : A five-month field trial

    University essay from KTH/Hållbar utveckling, miljövetenskap och teknik

    Author : William Gulding; [2023]
    Keywords : Adsorption; D-Rainclean; metal removal; Reactive filter; stormwater treatment;

    Abstract : Highway runoff and its pollutants are of growing concern. These pollutants require treatment as their concentration often are increased. A common removal method is the use of sedimentation ponds that removes particulates through gravity. READ MORE

  3. 3. Gravity water waves over constant vorticity flows: from laminar flows to touching waves

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Matematik (naturvetenskapliga fakulteten); Lunds universitet/Matematikcentrum

    Author : Francisco Gonçalves Jorge Dias de Carvalho; [2023]
    Keywords : Partial differential equations; Water waves; Euler equations; Free boundary problem; Bifurcation theory; Nonlinear functional analysis; Hilbert transform; Mathematics and Statistics;

    Abstract : In a recent paper, Hur and Wheeler proved the existence of periodic steady water waves over an infinitely deep, two-dimensional and constant vorticity flow and subject to gravity whose profile overhangs, among which, waves whose surface touches at a point, enclosing a bubble of air. We take this further, proving the existence of a continuous curve of water waves from a laminar flow up to a touching wave for fixed non-zero gravity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Simulating Space

    University essay from Lunds universitet/Institutionen för arkitektur och byggd miljö

    Author : Hedda Mannhard; [2022]
    Keywords : Spacedesign; zero gravity; interior design; virtual space; interior design tools; Arts and Architecture;

    Abstract : he late visionary architect Lebbeus Woods once said; "We inhabit space in which we are not sure how to move". With increasing environmental destruction and rising see levels we might soon be forced to literally inhabit space, in which we definitely are not sure how to move. READ MORE

  5. 5. Calibration and Evaluation of Inertial Navigation with Zero Velocity Update for Industrial Fastening Tools

    University essay from KTH/Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS)

    Author : Johan Rågmark; [2021]
    Keywords : Inertial navigation; Inertial measurement unit; Zero velocity update; Indoor positional navigation; Kalman filter; Tröghetsnavigering; Inertial measurement unit; Zero velocity update; Inomhuspositionering; Kalman filter;

    Abstract : Indoor Positional Navigation (IPN) systems can be used to track the position of tools in factories which is crucial for quality assurance in many manufacturing industries. Inertial navigation is rarely used on its own because of the noisy Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors which contribute to large drift. READ MORE
