European security- Turkeys role in the the new global context

Abstract: Turkey has made countless tries to join the European union in the past. They are member of all the other European organizations but the question about a full EU membership has always been controversial. However during the last year great steps forward were made. And in this year (2005) Turkey will initiate membership negotiations. The aim of this thesis is to try and find out what has led to this new stance. The new international context that emerged after the 911 attacks is greatly emphasised. The ?new? relations between the EU and Turkey are observed in the direct correlation of these events that changed the international system forever.
