Abstract: Telecommunications databases have high requirements on availability and real-time performance. The database implementation must be able to handle millions of active subscribers and thousands of concurrent  database requests. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate if LDAP  which is a directory-based database technology can be used to serve consolidated subscriber data in a telecommunications network. A LDAP database service with a fault-tolerant and resilient server topology, an Erlang-based LDAP client and test framework has been developed to evaluate LDAP in GSM and IMS networks. The performance of the developed components is analyzed in terms of throughput, latency, capacity and hardware requirements. The analysis concludes that LDAP is feasible as a technology for consolidating and serving subscriber data in the telecommunications domain and that Erlang is a powerful tool for development and testing.
