Accused of sexual assault or a victim?
Abstract: Abstract Accusations of sexual assault are very disputed in today’s society. It is a sensitive subject which deserves to be treated with respect, since the alleged crimes are of a dire nature. Since the rise of the social movement #MeToo, women all over the world have shared their experiences of sexual assault. It has resulted in many famous men being publicly accused. These women have been publicly commended for their bravery and their strength. However, it has also resulted in many people who are angry and who claim that these men are innocent, the men themselves often among those. Comedian Soran Ismail was during 2017 accused of sexual assault by several women. The investigations around these accusations were shut down due to lack of evidence or because the statute of limitations had expired. Swedish national television broadcaster, Sveriges Television (SVT) produced a documentary called Persona Non Grata which depicts Ismail’s perspective of this. This essay explores if and in what ways SVT portrays Ismail as a victim. It adheres to a theoretical framework produced with the help of professor and author Sarah Banet-Weiser and authors Kate Manne and Alison Phipps. These women all explore how men accused of sexual assault are depicted as victims. The methods used are a narrative analysis and a content analysis in accordance with the book on research methods by Bergström & Boréus. Key words: Ismail, victim, #MeToo, sexual assault, SVT
