Abstract: In this essay I will discuss alterations that have been made to the storyline of the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, when the novel is made into the movie with the same name. The focus of the essay is on  the different types of devices used, such as lighting and color, and extra diegetic devices, that were used in the movie to make it fit into the modern-day society and to make it aesthetically pleasing to the eye. By comparing the novel and the movie the essay reaches the conclusion that the director Baz Luhrmann has stayed true to the original storyline but has made alterations that helps the movie connect to the modern day society.
