Modeling the penetration of fragmented shaped charge jets

University essay from Uppsala universitet/Materialfysik

Abstract: The penetration power of a shaped charge is an important characteristic in determining its capability. A model has previously been developed by FOI to analytically predict the penetration of a shaped charge jet striking a target at varying stand-off distances. This works aims to, by modification of this model, investigate the decrease of the penetration at large stand-off as an effect of primarily jet drift and tumbling. The model uses the data of an X-ray image of the jet, and as such an X-ray image of the jet is evaluated. The results show that the jet drift and tumbling indeed cause the penetration to decrease, however, there is a discrepancy when compared to experiments. In addition, a program for visualizing the penetration process has been developed. This program has proven to be a useful tool in the development of the penetration algorithm.
