The influencing factors of thriving among nursing home residents : A descriptive review

Abstract: Background: As the overall medical level of society improved and the populationstructure shifted to aging, nursing home has became an important service facility. Thethriving of residents should be an important research direction. However, the factorsthat influence the thriving of nursing home residents were unclear and needed to furtherexplore.Aim: The aim of this review was to describe the influencing factors of thriving amongnursing home residents.Data sources: The systematic search was undertaken between March and May 2022 infour databases: PubMed, Cinahl, PsycInfo and SwePub.Methods: Full-text articles published in English between 2016 and 2022 were included.Studies were conducted if they addressed the factors influencing nursing homeresidents' thriving. The two authors jointly conducted a study eligibility and qualityassessment and synthesized the influencing factors.Results: A total of 7 articles met the criteria and were systematically reviewed andsynthesised. In personal factors (presence of cognitive impairment and lack of capacityfor autonomous activities) made a negative impact on thriving. In the human-relatedenvironment and non-human-related environment (having access to others, nursesinterventions for person-centered care measures, good residential environment)positively affected residents' thriving.Conclusions: The study found that cognitive impairment were negatively associatedwith thriving. Factors such as a good unit environment and access to information werepositively associated with resident thriving. Positive factors should be usedappropriately and negative factors should be avoided to promote resident thriving.Keywords: Nursing homes, Residents, Thriving
