University essay from Malmö universitet/Hälsa och samhälle

Abstract: A Stakeholder assessment study: a digital return-to-work application for individuals with mental illness PATRIK ENGDAHL Background: Depression and anxiety related mental illness is one of the most common factors for reduced health in Europe, and often result in unemployment. ICT-technology is believed to have an important part in the future regarding delivery of adequate welfare service and care. In this study the researcher assess the relevance of a digital return-to-work tool for individuals with mental illness (depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder), via relevant stakeholders. Method: A qualitative, stakeholder assessment study was conducted to explore the experience, ideas and thought about a digital return-to-work application for individuals with mental illness. Semi-structured (n=32) and focus group interviews (n=2) were conducted with stakeholders who were involved with the target group (managers, professionals and end-users). The analysis of the interviews was guided by Graneheim & Lundmans (2003) qualitative content analysis method. Results: The result presents important factors that need to be considered to make a digital return-to-work tool successful. (1) Many stakeholders reported usability as an important factor in a return-to-work application. (2) Stakeholder suggested a wide variety of functions and features to facilitate a return-to-work process. (3) How ICT-tools can facilitate a more empowered patient. (4) Lastly, different implementation challenges that a return-to-work-tool potentially face when introduced to organizations and end-users. Conclusions: This study verify the relevance of a digital return-to-work tool. ICT-technology have the potential to meet end-users needs, in a way that foster empowerment and engagement. More research are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of a return-to-work tool for individuals with depression and anxiety.
