Abstract: Abstract Title: The Crux of Virtual Leadership: Understanding how Virtual Leadership is Exercised in Practice by Examining a Case Study in a Global Organizational Context Authors: Johanna Delshammar and Josefine Artman Supervisor: PhD Stefan Svenningsson, Department of Business Administration Submission date: 22nd of May 2020 Course: BUSN49 Degree Project in Managing People, Knowledge and Change Purpose: The purpose of this research is to contribute with a deeper understanding of how virtual leadership efforts are exercised in practice within a global organizational context. Moreover, the study also aims to contribute with theoretical insight on the virtual leadership phenomenon, as well as enhance the understanding of how it can be exercised by practitioners. Methodology: This study is a case study adopting a qualitative method following a multi-paradigmatic approach, shifting between the interpretative- and the critical approach. The data collection was made through in-depth semi-structured interviews and document analysis. We have used an abductive approach, which has allowed us to go back and forth between theory and empirical findings when assimilating new disclosures. Contributions: This study contributes to the literature with a detailed description of how virtual leadership is exercised in practice in a global organizational context. More specifically, through illustrating that popular leadership ideals are misaligned with the virtual leadership efforts practiced at our case company Globe-T.
