Abstract: This master thesis examines the relationship between physical office space and organisational identification. In this context, the paper investigates the importance Millennials place on the physical office as a work environment and the extent to which identification with organisations (OID) has changed as a result of the sudden removal of the office in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. It presents the central role that organisations, but in particular our relationship with them, play in our lives. It also elaborates on the relation of identification to the social identity approach, which has a great influence on our perception of ourselves and, consequently, on our self-esteem. About our workplace, it is furthermore shown that a high identification is reflected in a lower stress level, as well as a higher enthusiasm, since our basic needs for security, belonging, self-affirmation and wholeness are satisfied. Furthermore is illustrated, that our environment has a great influence on our self-perception, which forms a framework for our feelings, thoughts, and behaviour. Based on the data collected through semi-structured interviews with individuals belonging to the Millennial generation, the thesis evaluates that the absence of the office leads to a long-term lowered OID. However, at the same time, it has been found that a sudden crisis situation might strengthens the sense of belonging of individuals within a group and creates a feeling of familiarity and connectedness. Last but not least, the future significance of OID gets discussed within this thesis. Particular reference is made to the changing personal needs of Millennials, the desire for increased autonomy and flexibility, and possible career changes. Overall, the thesis states that OID should not be perceived as obsolete, but that especially the role of organisational values, leadership, and working culture including flexibility and responsibility should be taken into closer consideration and be perceived as having a high potential to establish a profound relationship between employees and organisations.
