UX Re-Design of an Image Management System in Healthcare

University essay from Lunds universitet/Ergonomi och aerosolteknologi; Lunds universitet/Certec - Rehabiliteringsteknik och Design

Abstract: As incidences of chronic diseases increase, the tools to diagnose, treat and monitor such conditions become more important. Medical imaging technologies, being one of these tools, still face challenges in safe and effective use. At the same time, poor design of medical devices causes errors that could be avoided using proper design methods. The master thesis is written in collaboration with Bildteknik, a medical image engineering company that provides hospitals internationally with an image management system, InVision. The scope of the thesis was to redesign InVision using User Experience design principles. The aim was to improve InVision’s current functionality and user interface and to examine whether there are additional needs for specific labs that treat heart conditions regarding streamlining, increasing quality of work and reducing unnecessary work created by surrounding systems that could be incorporated into InVision. An iterative interaction design process was used with a user experience perspective. Primary user needs, behaviours, and current issues with InVision were found by using data gathering methods such as interviews and observations. Ideation was used to render solutions to the issues found during the data gathering. Four iterations of prototypes were created, of which one high fidelity prototype. Changes to the design were made to support the users’ workflow by for example providing more relevant information before, during and after an examination. This helps the users with prioritizing patients, planning and documenting examinations as well as finding specific examinations. Usability tests were performed with 12 participants which showed that the final prototype was easy to use, with best imaginable usability and good functionality. Points of improvement was also found that can be developed in future work.
