The interplay between technocratic and socio-ideological controls in managing strategic tension - A case study of a large retail company

University essay from Handelshögskolan i Stockholm/Institutionen för redovisning och finansiering

Abstract: This paper investigates how management controls may be used to manage strategic tensions. By conducting an exploratory single case study on a Swedish listed company operating in the fashion and retail industry, this paper shows how the interplay between technocratic and socio-ideological controls manifests in a variety of ways to manage empirically observed strategic tensions. Through exploring the dimension of strategic tension management, this paper provides insights into how dynamic tensions between interplaying controls may lead to organisational competitive advantages. The variety of unique interacting controls identified during the course of the study contribute to building a case for how the interplay between control forms may be more intricate and nuanced than what is conventionally understood.
