Alternatives to the welfare system in Sweden

University essay from Högskolan i Halmstad/Akademin för ekonomi, teknik och naturvetenskap

Abstract:

The issue addressed in this article is what parts of the Swedish welfare system could be changed and how. The parts of the welfare analysed are limited to education policies, unemployment insurance policies and childcare policies. To find out what alternatives there might be, I’ve compared these three aspects to the policies of a very different liberal welfare state, The US. By analysing both secondary data and primary data conducted by a questionnaire answered by Swedish municipality politicians, I concluded that in education policies and unemployment policies the American system could be an alternative to the Swedish, but in childcare the high taxes correspond to the social benefits provided.
