Nonlinear Instability of Evolution Equations

Abstract: In this thesis we explore the connection between spectral stability and nonlinear stability of evolution equations. Using semigroup theory a result on nonlinear instability from spectral instability is proven. This result is then applied to two examples: Travelling heteroclinic solutions of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and constant solutions of the Lugiato-Lefever equation.
