Platform-independent indoor positioning system

Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the possibility and feasibility of a platform-independent positioning system capable of determining the location of mobile devices without imposing additional requirements on the hardware and software of the device other than supporting Wi-Fi. Focus is on designing a scalable system capable of positioning devices on multiple sites. The suggested solution uses commercially available Wi-Fi access points to observe the received signal strength when a device probes for nearby access points. The information gathered by the access points is forwarded to a server cluster that uses the signal strength data to determine the location of the device.
