The Internet of Things: Addressing the risks of smart homes : An analysis of Internet of Things-based smart homes from a security standpoint

Abstract: The security aspects of the Internet of Things (IoT) have become increasingly important as the number of connected devices continues to grow. This study presents a thorough analysis of the IoT security issues that exist, with an emphasis on smarthome devices. A three-step ethical hacking process was used on a popular smart plug where the results showed that these devices are vulnerable and may be easily and effectively abused by attackers. This report also summarizes the energy, and environmental effects of IoT security and smart home devices in addition to the security issues associated with IoT. The potential costs of security breaches as well as the overall economic impact that IoT devices have is also laid out. Overall, this paper presents a thorough review of the security risks the IoT is currently facing and potential consequences. It is designed to be a resource for researchers and consumers who are interested in learning about the security risks associated with the Internet of Things and how to minimize them.
