Abstract: Movement is a constant factor in human nature. Throughout history, migration has played a constant role. People tend to move, leaving the place called home in the search for a better life. A journey that might be voluntary but sometimes one is left without any choice. In today's "European refugee crisis", the pattern of movement has come to reveal societal gaps where integration fails and segregation increases. Alarming reception conditions in refugee camps continue to be anything but dignified, speaking of a need for alternative reception strategies.    Meanwhile, refugee reception seen in small-sized communities seems to be an alternative that is beneficial for many reasons. The rural areas of Europe are facing a somewhat contrasting challenge. A population shift is draining societies of their inhabitants, threatening the existence of many small communities.    Along these lines, this thesis explores the potential for refugee reception in the rural context of Lesvos, Greece. The structure of this report goes through the background around the rural decline, important aspects for the feasibility in the context, and strategies to address the former. Finally, it resolves into a potential proposal that aims to respond to the research findings. Moreover, the research is based on literature review, mapping and collaborations. The report highlights the importance of developing local opportunities in regards to creating social value. The findings also identify specific mountain villages that could benefit from immigration and their need for restoring the agricultural sector.    It concludes that the mountain villages of Lesvos have the potential to serve as an inclusive alternative of refugee reception, as the smaller scale can contribute to the very valuable sense of belonging.
