Abstract: This paper deals with the historical novel Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier. It focuses on the development of the character Kitty Coleman who is a Victorian middle-class housewife. The essay shows that Kitty is very different from the ideal Victorian woman and that her inability to conform to the role she has been assigned makes her unhappy. Not until she joins the women's suffrage movement does she find a meaning to her life.
