Automatic Measurement Setup for Characterization of On-Chip Tunable Grating Couplers
Abstract: Grating couplers are used for coupling betweenoptical fibers and on-chip silicon photonics waveguides. Efficientfiber-to-chip coupling is elemental in in the development ofphotonics, making the process of evaluating new grating couplerdesigns vital. The idea of tunable grating couplers is to useparallel plate actuation to manipulate the power distribution ofthe coupled light, thus affecting coupling efficiency and openingfor implementation of applications such as laser scanning andranging on chip. As new grating coupler designs are developed, they need to be evaluated through experiments to determinetheir behavior. Hence, there is a need to develop a reliable andrepeatable method for characterization. We have successfullydesigned and implemented an automated measurement setup thatcan be used to characterize tunable grating couplers. We havealso showed that tunable grating couplers can in fact be used tooptimize coupling efficiency between optical fibers and on-chipsilicon photonics waveguides.
