Abstract: Data interchange between differentweb applications and web-services becomesmore and more common. Not only to send orreceive data from another service orapplication but also to reuse modules and webservicefunctionality from one application toanother. There are many standards andprotocols available today to use when buildingweb-services. This research will only focus onthree of them which all represent some of themost common implementations when buildingweb-services of today. These are XML-RPC,SOAP and REST. They have differencesbetween each other but can perform the sametasks for a web-service. They are examinedthrough performance and implementationissues, benchmarking as well as interviews. The result reveals performance issues forXML-RPC as well as how complex SOAP canbe for inexperienced users. In addition it alsoreveals why REST is gaining popularityrecently.
