Sedumtaks kolinlagrinspotential på årsbasis

University essay from SLU/Dept. of Soil and Environment

Abstract: One of the environmental issues facing today’s society is the increased emission of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, from urbanization. There is a need of innovative solutions to that problem and this thesis aim to evaluate sedum green roofs ability to yearly carbon sequestration and evaluate if it could reduce the effect of urbanization on climate change. Another aim is to analyse the impact of air temperature and the medium’s moisture content on carbon sequestration at different light levels. The potential of sedum roofs to sequester carbon was estimated using light response functions established from carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange measurements in climate chambers and scaled up to a yearly value using data of air temperature and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) Uppsala 2013. The result showed that sedum roof sequesters 45 g C m-2 year-1. Put in relation to prior studies about carbon sequestration the amount is low, but if other positive aspect of sedum roof such as it´s ability to isolate rooftops, which indirect reduces the emissions of green house gases, is encountered it is a good solution for urban environments. The fact that the alternative roofs such as tile roof, felt roof and tin roof do not sequester any carbon dioxide shows sedum roofs potential of being a great solution to reduce greenhouse gases in urban areas.
