Ransomware and phishing cyberattacks: analyzing the public’s perception of these attacks in Sweden
Abstract: Digitization of activities has had a lot of positive effects on efficiency. But it also has caused several types of security issues and opened the door for diverse types of cyberattacks. Some of those attacks are based on luring people and therefor they are categorized as social engineering attacks, such as Phishing and Ransomware attack. The knowledge and awareness of cyberattacks are the main factors to defend against these attacks. This thesis is a literature review about these two attacks and will analyze the general public’s perception and knowledge about these attacks in Sweden. A systematic literature review about phishing and ransomware attacks and a semi-structured interview with an field in the field of cybersecurity. A web-based questionnaire was used to collect data and information of two sub-groups of the population. The first sub-group is students currently studying at university; the second group is people between 18 and 45 years old without a university degree. The data then analyzed using mathematics methods in the SPSS software. It can be concluded that the general knowledge of phishing and ransomware is quite low. The results from the survey shows that students at university have a slightly better understanding of phishing and ransomware than people without a university degree. The result shows that people believes that it is less likely to be targeted by ransomware than the phishing attack. Awareness of attacks and methods is the key factor to understanding these attacks.
